Studies for babies and toddlers

Find the Cause! LookIt Study AGE: 15-19 months old TIME: About 15 minutes This study is hosted on MIT's LookIt online study platform. You can participate in this study anytime, and do not need to schedule a videochat with a researcher (LookIt will walk you through all the information you need!). In this study, your child will be shown short videos, where some objects make a machine light up and play music, and others do not. Then the objects are sorted into different boxes based on whether they made the machine work. At the end of the study, your baby will see some new objects and we will measure where on the screen they look. We are interested in whether babies predict which box the new objects will be sorted in. How do babies see events? AGE: 6-7 months old TIME: About 10-15 minutes How do babies understand interactions between objects in the world? In this study we will ask you to sit with your baby while your baby watches a series of animations of simple interactions between shapes. We measure how long your baby looks at each event to understand what kinds of differences between these events matter to them. Questions? Water Displacement AGE: 6 and 7-year-olds TIME: About 20 minutes In this study (6- & 7-yr-olds), we are interested in children’s reasoning about the principles of water displacement. Your child will play a game with the experimenter over a video call and will answer questions about what will happen to the water level after an object is submerged in it. Questions? Learning about new objects AGE: 4-9 years olds TIME: 10-15 minutes What do children learn about a new kind of object when they see it for the first time? This is a 10-15-minute self-guided game in your web browser where we introduce your child to a bunch of examples of two new kinds of objects, and then see what they've learned about the objects from those examples. What would have happened? AGE: 5-8 years old TIME: About 10 minutes In this study we are interested in how children answer the question "what would have happened?". Your child will watch a cat video and read a story with an experimenter over a video call, and answer some questions about what would have happened if something had been different. Questions? What size should it be? AGE: 4-6 years old TIME: About 25-30 minutes We are interested in understanding how children remember what the sizes of objects are. In this study, your child will be shown a series of objects (e.g. a basketball, sock, etc.) and will be ask to make three judgments: do you know what this object is (yes/no)? What is the name of this object? What size do you expect the object to be? The experimenter will adjust the size of the objects on the screen according to your child's specifications. Questions? What Do You Know? AGE: 6-8 years old TIME: About 20 minutes In this 20-minute study we are interested in how children attend to and remember information. Your child will play a short game with the experimenter over a video call where they will answer 20 multiple question trivia questions. Afterwards they will be asked questions about the trivia game.
